Project 3

Architectural Design II- ARC 257

This project proposes the design of a Non-Denominational Chapel for Farmingdale State College, envisioned as a spiritually profound space that mediates the tension between the built campus context and the natural environment. Guided by the directive to utilize light as a primary ordering element and to avoid symmetrical forms, the design separates sacred and secular functions to create distinct atmospheres for worship and reflection. The proposal aims to integrate the building into the existing campus fabric while providing a sanctuary where individuals of all faiths can reflect on life's events through the creative manipulation of light and space.

Light Background Research

Frank Lloyd Wright-Untarian Meeting House
Exhibit-I-HistoricMeetingHouse.jpg

In the Unitarian Meeting House, Frank Lloyd Wright utilized the building’s geometry as a primary light control device, featuring a soaring, south-facing glass "prow" that floods the sanctuary with natural illumination. He balanced this transparency with deep overhanging eaves that block harsh summer glare while admitting low winter sun, effectively using light to define the spiritual atmosphere. By dissolving the visual barrier between the interior and the landscape, Wright established nature and its changing light patterns—rather than religious iconography—as the focal point of worship.
