Project 1:Form and Function
Architectural Design II- ARC 257
The project examines how a design's function must transform its form to achieve functional beauty. The core function is the requirement for a pedestrian bridge to open and provide a 30' wide by 40' high clearance. To meet this, the static Arch Bridge prototype was transformed by integrating the "Umbrella Mechanism" as the movement analogy. This functional mandate resulted in an asymmetrical, hybrid structure where the arch terminates at a truss tower, and the movable deck section utilizes an exposed, articulated truss system that mimics the umbrella's lifting action. The final form is a direct and truthful expression of this required functional movement.
